Utplutih | Lift up!

Updated: May 23, 2022

Have you ever been to a yoga class where the teacher dabs you with essential oils and reads you a poem at the end? Well Ashtanga closes out the sequence with quite the opposite. Meet Utplutih.

Etymology

Sanskrit Name: Utplutih

English Translation: Lift Up

Drishti:

Nose

How to:

Utplutih is the final posture of the Ashtanga sequence. With the legs bound in lotus, this posture asks that we gather up one last burst of strength and hold up our body for 10 breaths. And as the saying goes, "Pick it up, don't put it down."

1. Begin with the legs in padamasana.

2. Lift the knees up off the floor, placing the hands by the sides of the hips.

3. Lift up gazing toward the nose.
