Ardha Baddha Padma Paschimatanasana is a seated posture that helps to increase hip and shoulder mobility.

Etymology

Sanskrit Name: Ardha Baddha Padma Paschimattanasana

English Translation: Half Bound Lotus Intense Back of the Body Posture

Ardha - Half

Baddha - Bound

Padma - Lotus

Paschima - Back of. the Body, West

Ut - Intense

Asana - Posture

How to:

  • Begin seated in Dandasana.

  • Bring the right foot into half Padmasana by bringing the outside edge of the foot into the left hip crease.

  • Reach the right hand behind the back and catch hold of the right toe or foot.

  • Grab the left foot with the left hand.

  • Exhale as you fold. Hold for 5 breaths.

  • After five breaths, inhale and look up. Keep hold of both feet as you exhale.

  • Repeat on the left side.

Notes:

If you have difficulty catching any bind, you can use a binding towel to help make the connection.
