Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument located in Wiltshire, England, and is one of the most famous and mysterious archaeological sites in the world. It consists of a circular arrangement of massive standing stones—some weighing up to 25 tons—on a grassy plain. Archaeologists believe it was constructed in several stages, with the earliest parts dating back to around 3000 BCE.

The exact purpose of Stonehenge is still debated, but it likely served as a ceremonial or religious site, possibly related to burial rituals, solar and lunar alignments, or seasonal observances. The stones are precisely aligned with the sunrise of the summer solstice and the sunset of the winter solstice, suggesting it may have functioned as a kind of astronomical calendar or sacred space for ancient people tracking the cycles of the heavens.

On the summer solstice, the sun rises directly over the heel stone, casting light into the heart of the monument. This alignment implies sun worship or a solar calendar, likely helping ancient peoples track time for agricultural or spiritual purposes.

Excavations have revealed that Stonehenge was used as a burial site, particularly in its earlier phases. Cremated human remains dating back to around 3000 BCE have been found in nearby pits. This suggests it may have functioned as a sacred site for honoring the dead, possibly involving rituals of ancestor worship or transitions into the afterlife.

Some archaeologists believe Stonehenge was seen as a place of healing. The nearby site of Bluestonehenge, and the fact that many of the stones were brought from Wales (especially the bluestones, believed to have healing properties), supports the theory that people may have traveled there for spiritual or physical restoration.

Stonehenge likely served as a ritual center where communities came together for important ceremonies—whether honoring the gods, ancestors, or natural cycles.
