You're entitled to a personal revolution. Weather Sun in Aries Waxing Crescent Moon in Taurus Wednesday, April 14, 2021 Let's do a word association. What do you think of when you hear the word "free"? Is it more closely related to $0.00 or something more like freedom? My definition of the word "free" has changed tremendously over the past few years, and I think it's because I have been undergoing a personal freedom revolution. This increase in freedom for me has been an increase in open heartedness, openness to new experience, optimism, and on a very basic level, mental freedom, though all of these things are inextricably tied together.

- Vegan Sweet Potato Stew
It has 3 basic ingredients: red beans, sweet potatoes, and collard greens. This is one of my favorite winter dishes to cook! It has 3 basic ingredients: red beans, sweet potatoes, and collard greens. It's kind of a chili, so feel free to be heavy handed with the chili powder, cayenne pepper, and habanero. Balance out the heat with sweet potatoes and warm cinnamon. This fills my large pot, which is about 12 hearty servings. Ingredients 3 Sweet Potatoes 1/2 Large Bag Collard Greens (or 1 lb) 1 Large Bag Red Beans (32 oz.) 1/4 cup Onion 2 Clove Garlic 3 T Olive Oil 4 T Chili Powder 4 T Turmeric 2 T Cumin 1 T Cinnamon 1 t Allspice Salt to taste Instructions Bake 1 Potato until soft. (I cook on 400 for about 45 minutes) Dice onion and garlic. Cut 2 remaining potatoes into large squares. Quick boil red beans for 5 minutes then let rest. Add collard greens and water. Add as little water as is necessary. You will have to boil off the majority of the water, so the less the better. Remove the baked sweet potato from the skin and add to water. This sweet potato will melt and will give the stew a nice creamy texture. If desired, chop and add the remaining skin. Add veggies, oil, and seasonings. Cook on medium high. Add the remaining potato squares. Cook with the top off for 1.5 - 2 hours or until the majority of the water is cooked off and it's more stewey than soupey.

- Asana | No. 3 of The 8 Limbs of Yoga
Postures are a great entryway to yoga, but there is so much more to yoga than asana. The Previous Limb -> Niyamas Etymology Sanskrit Word: Asana English Translation: Posture References to Asana: Sthira sukhamasanam. Yoga Sutra 2.46 "Asana is a steady, comfortable, posture that can be held without interruption." Information It's really important to remember that asana, or the postures that we do in yoga class are the third limb of yoga there are two limbs that come before that. If we haven't set our heart in the right intention and haven't really set an intention to do a spiritual practice of inward reflection, yoga can become more like athletic exercise or something that's really not yoga. When I go to yoga classes, I think it's really important to consider: "I know we're doing postures here, I know there are asanas being practiced, but are we really practicing yoga? Are there cues for me to look inwardly or are there cues for me to look outwardly? Are there cues for me to study myself or are there cues for me to hey look at everybody else?" Just really thinking about that and what we're really learning in our yoga practice. The Next Limb -> Pranayama
- Planning a Yoga Sequence
There are tons of ways to set up a yoga sequence. If you’re stuck, here are a few of our favorite methods. General Principles Any sequence, regardless of the theme or style should have a beginning, middle, and end. What is the warmup? What is the peak, and how will they wind down? Also take into consideration the level of the class. Is this a truly all-levels class with people of all skill levels including beginners? Or do most of them practice yoga regularly? This makes a huge difference in how you put together your class. Use the first few minutes of class during the warmup to assess the general mobility of your students. Every class is different. And even familiar students may be tighter or looser on different days. Pay attention to them and be willing to adapt your plans if it will better accommodate the people in front of you. Pick a Theme Maybe your heart is extra open tight now or you’ve been working on your tight hamstrings. You can pick pretty much anything and plan a sequence around it. you can pick an area of the body, a muscle group, or a chakra and run with it. Teach Toward a Peak Pose Pick a challenge pose like handstand and teach your class like a mini workshop with all the poses leading teaching principles needed to accomplish the final pose. Set up their expectation to hVe fun and that even if they can’t do the peak pose perfectly the first time, no worries. They are learning important keys that will help them get it. Repeat A Mini Sequence A fun way to put together a class is to flow poses together that move together like a slow yoga dance. Some people really have the magic touch to pull this off. If you try this, build a short sequence that you repeat. This way the class will feel like they’ve learned a routine and gotten better at something towards the end. Some of your more diligent students will be able to remember it enough to practice at home.
- What is Mysore Style Yoga Class?
Mysore class is a method of teaching Ashtanga yoga that comes out of Mysore, India. Mysore is an all-levels class in Ashtanga yoga where students can come in any time during a window, usually early in the morning, and do their assigned practice. Everyone who comes to mysore class begins by learning Half Primary Series, and poses are added by the teacher from there. Initially, the student's only job is to remember the sequence, and this happens quickly. Whenever they come into mysore class, they can just lay down their mat and begin practicing. Everyone practices at their own pace and to their own breathing. The teacher is always nearby to help if a student forgets a pose or needs help safely getting into and out of a pose. The teacher also provides alignment cues. Mysore is the only true all levels class because it allows students to do their personal practice at their own pace. Even though the Primary Series may seem intimidating at first, it's simply an organized method of teaching yoga through a set sequence. By repetition, poses that initially seem inaccessible can become surprisingly possible. Because of this, it is recommended to practice daily, or at least a few times a week. The amount of growth and transformation that is possible in the Mysore room is amazing to experience and witness. - Don't Close Your Eyes | Habari Gani?
One of the ways yoga asks us to be present is by keeping the eyes open. Moon 1st Quarter Waxing Celestial Events Sun in Pisces Monday, February 22, 2021 Grand rising, family. Presence. Yoga asks us to become more present, but what does that really mean? The neverending battle between being in our heads and being present in the room... between enjoying the fantasy of what could be, and accepting the reality of what actually is right in front of you. One of the ways yoga asks us to be present is by keeping the eyes open. There are so many times when it's tempting and feels relaxing to close the eyes - in forward folds, for instance. But we find that closing the eyes tends to create sleepiness of the mind or even monkey mind. For some reason, it's more difficult to control the mind when the eyes are closed, and the mind more easily wanders into fantasyland and daydreaming or begins to relax into a kind of rest.
- Padmasana
Padmasana is a traditional pose for seated meditation. Sanskrit Name: Padmasana English Translation: Lotus Posture Drishti: Nose Padma - Lotus Asana - Posture Full Padmasana requires deep hip mobility that is difficult for most Westerners to get into at first because most of us are not accustomed to sitting in this way. However, with practice, you can get more comfortable putting your legs into Padmasana over time. Put the right leg on top. Then the left Padmasana is often used as a seat for connecting with the divine and our inner wisdom, so once in position, then you may add a mudra such as Yoga Mudra or Anjali Mudra, or maybe even practice japa meditation or chanting. - Be Full | Habari Gani?
Enjoy. Weather Sun in Aries Full Moon in Libra Sunday, March 28, 2021 There is a time for action and a time for rest. A time for ritual fasting, and a time for pancakes covered in butter and maple syrup. A time for purification, and a time to get dirt under your fingernails. It's called balance. As a long time spiritual aspirant, who grew up Christian, I used to believe that my worthiness and evidence of my "spiritualness" was my ability to discipline myself and practice austerities like fasting for long periods of time. There is definitely benefit to disciplining the body and the mind through these kinds of practices. However, I found that as much as they tamed some of my ways, they lit a fire under other unproductive ones, judgement being the first that comes to mind.
- Stay Connected | Habari Gani?
Heavily meditated. Weather Sun in Aries Waning Gibbous Moon in Libra Monday, March 29, 2021 As we come to a place of internal balance in our bodies and minds, we are considering what it means to come to a place of balance between the physical and spiritual sides of lives. On the physical side, we have our day-to-day lives in this 3D reality called Earth, our jobs, our money, the houses we live in, and the places we travel to on vacation. On the spiritual side, we have a bunch of other things that are harder to nail down -- the state of our inner world, the health of our minds, our divine connection to our intuition through practices like meditation, surrender to "the flow".
- Heal Deeply | Habari Gani?
Are you ready? Weather Sun in Aries Waning Crescent in Scorpio Wednesday, March 31, 2021 Let's go deeper. I practice an asana heavy method of yoga, called Ashtanga. I talk about it a lot because it is what starts my day on most mornings and is the foundation of my understanding of yoga. Ashtanga yoga is very regimented. We practice a set sequence, and many of us practice with the guidance of a teacher, whom we build a relationship with over a number of years. Some people like me practice with their teacher daily, while some Americans go to other states or as far as to India to see their teachers, sometimes on an annual basis.
