The gluteus maximus is one of the largest, most powerful muscles in the body and helps with standing and locomotion by extending the hips. This superficial muscle can easily become overly tight or weak and deactivated, depending on imbalances in other parts of the body.

Relaxing and lengthening the gluteus maximus


Postures that lengthen the gluteus maximus include:

Paschimatanasana

Uttanasana

Lizard




Contracting


Contracting the serratus anterior protracts the scapula, drawing them forward and outward..


Postures that strengthen the gluteus maximus include:

Dhanurasana

Urdhva Dhanurasana

Virabhadrasana C

Ustrasana
