Happiness is a state of well-being characterized by positive emotions, contentment, and a sense of fulfillment or purpose. It can be both fleeting—like the joy of a good moment—and lasting, as in a deep sense of life satisfaction.

Happiness often arises when our desires, values, and reality are in harmony, though as many on the spiritual path have realized, happiness can be fleeting and when our happiness is tied to external things, this emotion can become difficult to maintain.

Happiness is often linked to emotional experiences such as joy, gratitude, love, peace, or enthusiasm. Researchers often distinguish between hedonic happiness (pleasure-based) and eudaimonic happiness (purpose-driven or meaning-based), so self-reported happiness can be influenced by both external circumstances (like relationships, work, health) and internal factors (such as mindset, gratitude, and perspective).

Spiritually and philosophically, many traditions teach that happiness is not just about pleasure or success but about inner peace, alignment with one’s true self, or connection with something greater—like God, nature, or the universe. In this view, happiness becomes less about what happens to us and more about how we relate to life itself. True happiness, then, might be less about chasing good feelings and more about cultivating wholeness, balance, and love from within.
