It‘s exciting to bring home a brand new yoga mat and practice on it for the first time. But any new mat with a smooth surface such as the Manduka mat which is popular among Ashtangis can quickly turn into a slip and slide.

A Mysore rug or yoga towel can help with this, but it’s best to just go ahead and condition your mat.

How to Condition Your Yoga Mat

  1. Spray your mat with a thin layer of water.

  2. Cover with a generous amount of sea salt and let sit overnight.

  3. Scrub with a damp washcloth. Rinse and repeat until all of the salt is removed.

  4. Allow to air dry.
