Information

Saucha is a Sanskrit word meaning "purity" or "cleanliness", and it is one of the five niyamas (observances) in Patanjali’s Eight Limbs of Yoga. Saucha refers to both external and internal cleanliness, encompassing physical hygiene, mental clarity, and emotional purity. Practicing saucha involves creating a state of purity within the body and mind to foster a healthy, balanced, and serene life.

Physical Cleanliness

Maintaining the cleanliness of the body, surrounding environment, and even the food we eat. This includes practices like bathing, eating pure foods, and living in a clean space, which are believed to help the mind stay clear and focused.

Mental and Emotional Purity

Purifying one’s thoughts and emotions by letting go of negative thoughts, judgments, and attachments. Practicing saucha mentally involves being mindful of what we consume mentally—such as through media, relationships, or conversations—and striving to maintain a peaceful, clear mind.

Spiritual Purity

In yoga philosophy, saucha is seen as a way to cleanse the soul, creating space for deeper spiritual connection and understanding. When the body and mind are free from clutter and impurities, one can be more receptive to spiritual growth and self-awareness.
