Tirthankara are the 24 spiritual teachers, or saviors, who have reincarnated over and over again to earth during this time period in order to teach the path of righteousness, called the dharma. All of us are stuck in an infinite cycle of death and rebirth called samsara. Escape from. this cycle is called liberation or moksha. These tirthankaras are said to have escaped from or defeated samsara and achieved liberation as they have attained infinite wisdom, called kevalajñāna. They use their spiritual gifts, called siddhis to help illuminate the path for others to do the same.

The tirthankara can be compared to the messiah or christ figure.
