  • See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil | Three Wise Monkeys

Avoid all that is evil. Names The Three Wise Monkeys The Three Mystic Apes Information The proverb "See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" derives from a Japanese work of art created in the 17th century CE. Mizaru covers his eyes so he will see no evil. Kikazaru covers his ears so he will hear no evil. Iwazaru covers his mouth so he will speak no evil. The original artwork was inspired by the sayings of Confucius: “Look not at what is contrary to propriety; listen not to what is contrary to propriety; speak not what is contrary to propriety; make no movement which is contrary to propriety.” Some in the West have misunderstood this saying to mean turning a blind eye to wrongdoing, but it simply means to avoid carrying out wrong or evil actions in what we choose to look at, what we choose to listen to, and what we choose to say. Another way to look at it is to seek only the good and positive in all that we do. Those who follow the Shinto religion consider this the way to bring about good luck. • The Yamas | No. 1 of the 8 Limbs of Yoga

The Yamas are the 1st of the 8-Limbs of yoga. The 5 Yamas Ahimsa - Non-harming Satya - Truthfulness Asteya - Non-stealing Brahmacharya - Restraint, including sexual restraint Aparigraha - Freedom from greed, non-attachment Information The first of the eight limbs is the Yamas followed by the Niyamas. The yamas are simply personal observances that really set the heart and mind on the right path. You're not really practicing yoga unless the intention is correct so you could be doing a whole bunch of postures, but if we're not having the intention of yoga it's not yoga. A lot of yoga classes you might be doing things that look like yoga but if the intention is not to create harmony and peace within the self, to create love toward others, to heal, to heal others, to find a meditative inward looking space, then it's really not yoga, it's just movement to music. That's really something that we should consider as we call ourselves yogis, as we embark on yoga, and especially teach yoga. The first of the the yamas is ahimsa, which is non-harming or the positive of it would be loving-kindness. All of yoga starts with a really strong perspective which says, "I am taking a stance in my life that says that I will not harm other beings, I will not harm myself, and this is in words acts, deeds, thoughts; and I'm going to send loving kindness to others in all that I do and to myself in thoughts, words, acts, deeds, all of the above." When you take it into perspective, yoga has really been misconstrued in the West because you go to "yoga poses class" and you learn a few postures and you breathe you're like, "Oh I'm so sore," and yeah that's definitely part of it, but we've kind of made a mistake in not really explaining to people what this really is. What it really is is a spiritual discipline, so if you go to yoga class and you're hurting yourself or you're trying to compete with your neighbor or you're pissed off with that person, you're not practicing yoga because you're not practicing any of the limbs of yoga starting with Ahimsa. Ahimsa is the first of the first Yamas, which is the first limb of yoga because I think it's really that important to our practice. There are so many other Yamas, which are simply ways of being in the World, which say that I'm not going to steal from people, I'm not going to harm others and things like that. I'm going to be restrained in my behaviors and my actions, so I'm not going to be wild out of control. I'm going to practice some level of self-control, sexual restraint, restraint over my words my thoughts, my actions, even over my money. The Next Limb -> The Niyamas

  • Jesus & Beelzebul | Matthew 12

By your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned. The Books of the Bible Jesus and Beelzebul 22 Then they brought to him a demoniac who was blind and mute; and he cured him, so that the one who had been mute could speak and see. 23 All the crowds were amazed and said, “Can this be the Son of David?” 24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, “It is only by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons, that this fellow casts out the demons.” 25 He knew what they were thinking and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand. 26 If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself; how then will his kingdom stand? 27 If I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your own exorcists cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. 28 But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come to you. 29 Or how can one enter a strong man’s house and plunder his property, without first tying up the strong man? Then indeed the house can be plundered. 30 Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. 31 Therefore I tell you, people will be forgiven for every sin and blasphemy, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32 Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. A Tree and Its Fruit 33 “Either make the tree good, and its fruit good; or make the tree bad, and its fruit bad; for the tree is known by its fruit. 34 You brood of vipers! How can you speak good things, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 The good person brings good things out of a good treasure, and the evil person brings evil things out of an evil treasure. 36 I tell you, on the day of judgment you will have to give an account for every careless word you utter; 37 for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” New Revised Standard Version The words of Jesus (Yeshua) are in red. • Charity

Cultivate virtue for a blissful and fruitful life. The 7 Deadly Sins & the 7 Virtues Charity Charity is one of the seven virtues. Charity is giving selflessly to others out of love and a belief in God's abundance. In the Yoga Sutras, aparigraha, or non-greed/non-attachment is the last of the yamas, the 1st limb of yoga, which outlines personal ethics. When we trust God, we realize that we live in an abundant universe and that there is no lack except for within our minds. In reality, there is enough for everyone, if we would turn to God, making greed unnecessary. The opposite of charity is greed, one of the seven deadly sins. • Wrath

If you find yourself in a state of sin, simply cultivate the opposite. The 7 Deadly Sins & the 7 Virtues Wrath Wrath, or the expression of anger and the belief that we have the right to punish those around us is a highly destructive emotion. In the Yoga Sutras, dvesha or hatred is another of the kleshas that lead to pain and suffering. Anger is a highly detrimental emotion to ourselves. We hold onto anger and unforgiveness with the belief that it protects us like a shield, but all it does is poison us from the inside. When we hold onto anger and unforgiveness for long periods of time, years or even decades, it can even manifest within our bodies as physical illness. Vengeance belongs to God alone, and anyone who understands karma should know that the law of cause and effect is real. If someone has done something to us, rest assured that even if they don't show it, the action is on their spirit and the consequences will come to them at the appropriate time in God's love to teach and heal them. The opposite of wrath is patience. One can cultivate patience through forgiveness. Forgive as you would like to be forgiven. Let go of the past and focus on the future. The answer for wrath is simply to accept that we are forgiven and accepted by God even we we did not deserve it. When this happens, it becomes much easier to let go of our anger toward others as we see that they, like us, were lost and are actually in need of our prayers and well wishes. • Gluttony

If you find yourself in a state of sin, simply cultivate the opposite. The 7 Deadly Sins & the 7 Virtues Gluttony Gluttony, similar to lust, is a lack of self-control. While we often consider gluttony to be related to overeating, one can be a glutton of any substance. Overuse of drugs and alcohol are in this category. Interestingly, gluttony is also related to greed in that it comes from a place of lack. We overconsume to compensate for our perception of not having enough in some area. When related to drugs and alcohol, gluttony literally takes us out of our clear mind, out of our self-control, which simply separates us from God. The opposite of gluttony is temperance. One can cultivate temperance by practicing self-control and fasting. On a deeper level, trusting that all is well and trusting in the abundance of God can remove the desire to hoard food or escape from reality into drugs. • Envy

If you find yourself in a state of sin, simply cultivate the opposite. The 7 Deadly Sins & the 7 Virtues Envy Envy is the desire for what others have and is related to greed in that it comes from a belief of lack. Envy has a fundamental belief that we don't have what we need and that someone else has it. Rather than trusting God and being self-reflective, we look externally to what others are doing. This is never the way, as we can never tell how someone's inner experience is from the outside. Envy is a highly destructive emotion that can lead to putting other people down, gossip, and even aggressive action against the target of envy. The most sinister part of envy is that when people are deluded by this spirit, they find ways to justify their actions of tearing others down in order to help bring themselves up. The opposite of envy is gratitude. One can cultivate gratitude by identifying things for which to be thankful within one's current life. In the Yoga Sutras, raga, another of the kleshas, is attachment to things in the physical world. Remember, this life is all an illusion, which the yoga tradition would call maya. Nothing is what it seems on the outside. Envy is simply being fooled by superficial and false appearances. Look deeper than the surface. Limit your vision, even if only temporarily, by eliminating social media and other things that cause you to look into the illusions portrayed by other people. Focus on making the best out of your own life. Liveology Yoga Studios & Magazine creates uplifting content and products, sharing "More life. More yoga." • Lust

If you find yourself in a state of sin, simply cultivate the opposite. The 7 Deadly Sins & the 7 Virtues Lust Lust is simply following the flesh and our sexual desires without restriction. While God created us to have sex drives and to be sexual beings, God also offers us guidelines to enjoy our sexuality in a way that is most fruitful for everyone. Lust is rooted in a lack of self-control. Many people don't realize that even when using condoms, sex is an exchange of energy. Engaging in multiple sexual partners is like is following wind, being drawn in this direction and that, totally governed by our sexual desires, rather than being consciously in control. When people do this, over time, they may experience a high level of confusion, difficulty finding their way and finding the clarity of mind to make good decisions because the person is connected to the energy of so many people. Lack of sexual self-control is an easy way to lose one's sacred energy. The opposite of lust is chastity. One can cultivate chastity by focusing on self-control, practicing modesty in clothing and behavior, and by practicing celibacy and semen retention. In the Yoga Sutras, this sexual restraint is called brahmacharya, another of the yamas. Through brahmacharya, one is said to gain energy. • Greed

If you find yourself in a state of sin, simply cultivate the opposite. The 7 Deadly Sins & the 7 Virtues Greed Greed comes from the belief in lack, that there is not enough, and from a lack of trust in the total abundance of God. When we stop trusting in God, we take it upon ourselves to hoard money and resources, believing that it is scarce and hard to come by. Greed comes from a lack of love and generosity for others and a spirit of competition, believing we must compete against others for these limited resources, and only the best or the strongest will win. In reality, there is enough for everyone, if we would turn to God, making greed unnecessary. The opposite of greed is charity, giving selflessly to others out of love and a belief in God's abundance. In the Yoga Sutras, aparigraha, or non-greed/non-attachment is the last of the yamas, the 1st limb of yoga, which outlines personal ethics. • Jesus Praises John the Baptist | Matthew 11

Blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me. The Books of the Bible 1 Now when Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and proclaim his message in their cities. Messengers from John the Baptist 2 When John heard in prison what the Messiah was doing, he sent word by his disciples 3 and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?” 4 Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: 5 the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them. 6 And blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me.” Jesus Praises John the Baptist 7 As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind? 8 What then did you go out to see? Someone dressed in soft robes? Look, those who wear soft robes are in royal palaces. 9 What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is the one about whom it is written, ‘See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’ 11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one has arisen greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force. 13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John came; 14 and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come. 15 Let anyone with ears listen! 16 “But to what will I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to one another, 17 ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.’ 18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon’; 19 the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.” New Revised Standard Version The words of Jesus (Yeshua) are in red. • Not Peace, but a Sword | Matthew 10

Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. The Books of the Bible Not Peace, but a Sword 34 “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; 36 and one’s foes will be members of one’s own household. 37 Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; 38 and whoever does not take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it. Rewards 40 “Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. 41 Whoever welcomes a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward; and whoever welcomes a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive the reward of the righteous; 42 and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple—truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward.” New Revised Standard Version The words of Jesus (Yeshua) are in red. • The Mission of the Twelve Apostles | Matthew 10

Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness. The Books of the Bible The Twelve Apostles 1 Then Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness. 2 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon, also known as Peter, and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed him. The Mission of the Twelve 5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, 6 but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7 As you go, proclaim the good news, ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ 8 Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment. 9 Take no gold, or silver, or copper in your belts, 10 no bag for your journey, or two tunics, or sandals, or a staff; for laborers deserve their food. 11 Whatever town or village you enter, find out who in it is worthy, and stay there until you leave. 12 As you enter the house, greet it. 13 If the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. 14 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet as you leave that house or town. 15 Truly I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town. • Jesus Heals a Centurion’s Servant & Others | Matthew 8

Go; let it be done for you according to your faith. The Books of the Bible Jesus Heals a Centurion’s Servant 5 When he entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, appealing to him 6 and saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, in terrible distress.” 7 And he said to him, “I will come and cure him.” 8 The centurion answered, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only speak the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I also am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and the slave does it.” 10 When Jesus heard him, he was amazed and said to those who followed him, “Truly I tell you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith. 11 I tell you, many will come from east and west and will eat with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, 12 while the heirs of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” 13 And to the centurion Jesus said, “Go; let it be done for you according to your faith.” And the servant was healed in that hour. Jesus Heals Many at Peter’s House 14 When Jesus entered Peter’s house, he saw his mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever; 15 he touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she got up and began to serve him. 16 That evening they brought to him many who were possessed with demons; and he cast out the spirits with a word, and cured all who were sick. 17 This was to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah, “He took our infirmities and bore our diseases.” New Revised Standard Version The words of Jesus (Yeshua) are in red. • What Does it Mean to Prostrate?

A posture of deep humility and prayer. Information There are many postures for prayer to show humility and worship. Prostrating, or bowing with the face on the ground, is one posture for praying, showing humility, and deep respect. The experience of praying with the head to the ground is deeply humbling and can be a wonderful way to ask for forgiveness and show reverence to God, for someone of any faith. Praying with the face down on the ground is referenced in both the Old Testament (Hebrew Scriptures) and the New Testament (The Gospel) as well as in the Quran. Throughout Hebrew Scriptures, prostrating is a way of bowing on the ground as a sign of deep respect shown toward for certain people and toward God. People also fall in prostration as a sign of conviction, or guilt. Jesus is referenced as falling down and praying on his face to God at Gethsemane, as he asked for the burden to be removed from him. In Islam, prostrating is one of the prescribed postures during the five daily prayers. Scripture References Joseph Forgives His Brothers Genesis 50:15-21 15 Realizing that their father was dead, Joseph’s brothers said, “What if Joseph still bears a grudge against us and pays us back in full for all the wrong that we did to him?” 16 So they approached Joseph, saying, “Your father gave this instruction before he died, 17 ‘Say to Joseph: I beg you, forgive the crime of your brothers and the wrong they did in harming you.’ Now therefore please forgive the crime of the servants of the God of your father.” Joseph wept when they spoke to him. 18 Then his brothers also wept, fell down before him, and said, “We are here as your slaves.” 19 But Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid! Am I in the place of God? 20 Even though you intended to do harm to me, God intended it for good, in order to preserve a numerous people, as he is doing today. 21 So have no fear; I myself will provide for you and your little ones.” In this way he reassured them, speaking kindly to them. The Consequences of Rebelling Against God Deuteronomy 9:25-29 25 Throughout the forty days and forty nights that I lay prostrate before the LORD when the LORD intended to destroy you, 26 I prayed to the LORD and said, “Lord GOD, do not destroy the people who are your very own possession, whom you redeemed in your greatness, whom you brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand. 27 Remember your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; pay no attention to the stubbornness of this people, their wickedness and their sin, 28 otherwise the land from which you have brought us might say, ‘Because the LORD was not able to bring them into the land that he promised them, and because he hated them, he has brought them out to let them die in the wilderness.’ 29 For they are the people of your very own possession, whom you brought out by your great power and by your outstretched arm.” Ezra Summons the People to Obey the Law Nehemiah 8:5-6 And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was standing above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up. 6 Then Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God, and all the people answered, “Amen, Amen,” lifting up their hands. Then they bowed their heads and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground. Jesus Prays in Gethsemane Matthew 26:36-46 36 Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be grieved and agitated. 38 Then he said to them, “I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and stay awake with me.” 39 And going a little farther, he threw himself on the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet not what I want but what you want.” 40 Then he came to the disciples and found them sleeping; and he said to Peter, “So, could you not stay awake with me one hour? 41 Stay awake and pray that you may not come into the time of trial;a the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 42 Again he went away for the second time and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.” 43 Again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. 44 So leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words. 45 Then he came to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Get up, let us be going. See, my betrayer is at hand.” Liveology Yoga Studios creates uplifting content and products, sharing "More life. More yoga."
