The proverb "See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" derives from a Japanese work of art created in the 17th century CE.
Mizaru covers his eyes so he will see no evil.
Kikazaru covers his ears so he will hear no evil.
Iwazaru covers his mouth so he will speak no evil.
The original artwork was inspired by the sayings of Confucius:
“Look not at what is contrary to propriety; listen not to what is contrary to propriety; speak not what is contrary to propriety; make no movement which is contrary to propriety.”
Some in the West have misunderstood this saying to mean turning a blind eye to wrongdoing, but it simply means to avoid carrying out wrong or evil actions in what we choose to look at, what we choose to listen to, and what we choose to say.
Another way to look at it is to seek only the good and positive in all that we do. Those who follow the Shinto religion consider this the way to bring about good luck.
