Medicine is a journey that is full of adventures, knowledge, hardships, and sacrifices. All of which I have experienced and more. I have always wanted to become a doctor ever since I was a little girl. In fact, my pediatrician told my mother that I was going to be a doctor someday. However, I have experienced some uncertainty during the course of this journey. Let’s take a trip into the past.
While completing my undergraduate studies at Syracuse University, I was leaning more towards a career in psychology. I thought that I’d pursue a graduate degree and doctorate in the field. All of those plans were put on hold once my older brother was diagnosed with cancer at 25. He asked if I would move in with him and his family after graduating to help with his daily responsibilities. Of course this was a no brainer.
So, for the next 9 months, I spent my days taking my brother to his chemotherapy sessions, hospital visits, preparing meals, doing homework with his eldest daughter, and babysitting the youngest. Towards the end of that 9 months, after doctors told my brother that his cancer was in remission, it had returned and it had done so with a vengeance. Not more than a month had passed before the overwhelming force of this cancer had taken my brother’s life.
