Information

The Five Pillars of Islam are the core beliefs and practices that shape the foundation of a Muslim’s faith and actions. They represent the essential duties every Muslim is expected to follow, serving as a guide for worship, morality, and daily living. These pillars are rooted in the teachings of the Qur'an and the Hadith.

1. Shahada (Faith)

The Shahada is the declaration of faith:

"There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah."

This statement affirms the oneness of God (Tawhid) and the acceptance of Muhammad as His final prophet. Saying the Shahada sincerely, with understanding, is the first step into Islam.

2. Salat (Prayer)

Salat refers to the five daily prayers that Muslims perform at specific times: dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset, and evening. These prayers are a direct link between the worshiper and Allah and include physical movements and verses from the Qur’an. Prayer reinforces discipline, mindfulness, and submission to God.

3. Zakat (Almsgiving)

Zakat is the practice of giving a portion of one's wealth (usually 2.5% of savings annually) to those in need. It purifies wealth by acknowledging that all things ultimately belong to God. Zakat supports social justice, reduces poverty, and reminds Muslims of their duty to care for the less fortunate.

4. Sawm (Fasting)

Sawm is fasting during the month of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. From dawn to sunset, Muslims abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs. Fasting is a spiritual discipline that cultivates self-control, gratitude, and compassion for those who are hungry or in need.

5. Hajj (Pilgrimage)

Hajj is a pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia, required once in a lifetime for every Muslim who is physically and financially able. It takes place annually during the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah. Hajj is a profound act of worship that unites Muslims from around the world in equality, humility, and devotion to God.

Together, these five pillars shape the ethical, spiritual, and communal life of Muslims and serve as the framework for worship and devotion in Islam.
