- Kadampa Buddhism
The Founder of Modern Kadampa Buddhism is Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche, a world-renowned meditation master who holds the very essence of Buddha’s teachings in his heart. In the word, ‘Kadampa’, ‘Ka’ refers to Buddha’s teachings, and ‘dam’ to Atisha’s special Lamrim instructions. Kadampas, then, are practitioners who regard Buddha’s teachings as personal instructions and put them into practice by following the instructions of Lamrim. By integrating their understanding of all Buddha’s teachings into their practice of Lamrim, and by integrating their experience of Lamrim into their everyday lives, Kadampas use Buddha’s teachings as practical methods for transforming daily activities into the path to enlightenment.

Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead. The Books of the Bible Would–Be Followers of Jesus 18 Now when Jesus saw great crowds around him, he gave orders to go over to the other side. 19 A scribe then approached and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” 20 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” 21 Another of his disciples said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” 22 But Jesus said to him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.” New Revised Standard Version The words of Jesus (Yeshua) are in red. - Build a Solid Foundation
Ashtanga ABCs Day 2 {Build a Solid Foundation} Challenge Pose: Chaturanga Yoga is all about patience, and developing a personal practice is more of a marathon than a sprint. Many poses take months or years to master, so the practice becomes more about creating a Solid Foundation rather than performing perfect asana. A pose like Chaturanga engages the entire body. Even though you’re on 4 limbs, getting your elbows to a right angle can make it feel like an arm balance. Build a Solid Foundation by setting yourself in high plank with the hands shoulder distance and the feet hip distance. Keep the legs and core engaged as you lower only as far as you can control the descent. Stay strong out there.
- Keep a Strong Drishti
Where the eyes go, the attention follows. Ashtanga ABCs Day 7 {Keep a Strong Drishti} Challenge Pose: Utthita Trikonasana In the Tristhana method, asana (postures), breath, and drishti (gazing point), come together to focus the mind and turn your yoga practice into a moving meditation. Where the eyes go, the attention follows. Yoga captures the attention by asking us to look at a specific body part or in a certain direction in every asana. Rather than allowing our minds to wander aimlessly, focusing the mind allows us to increase the potency of our efforts. Without looking at others (both literally and figuratively), this encourages us to become more keenly aware of our experience in the moment. In Utthita Trikonasana, the drishti is toward the upward reaching hand.
- Ground Yourself
What are some grounding techniques that work for you? Ashtanga ABCs Day 8 {Ground Yourself} Challenge Pose: Utthita Parsvakonasana Grounding is one of my favorite benefits of yoga because helps me to be more present in this moment. Being ungrounded can feel like having anxiety, feeling generally unfocused, not being fully connected to the reality of a situation, or just having a mental or logical experience of life but not really feeling and experiencing it in your body. Yoga can be grounding as it connects you back to the ground you are standing on, and to your breath, body, and the moment you are practicing. In Utthita Parsvakonasana or Extended Side Angle Pose, you ground yourself as you press your hand and feet into the ground. You connect to yourself as you look at your drishti, the palm of the outstretched hand. And once you’re in the state of the asana, all there is to do is find stillness and breathe. One of my favorite non-yoga ways to ground myself is just taking my shoes off and walking on the grass with my bare feet. Dewey grass in the morning is particularly nice. What are some grounding techniques that work for you?
- Let Go of Attachments
Wherever you are today is where you need to be. Ashtanga ABCs Day 10 {Let Go of Attachments} Challenge Pose: Parsvottanasana Place the hands in prayer behind your back. Exhale as you square the hips and fold over the front leg. This pose is triggering for me. This is one of those poses that beautifully highlights an old hamstring injury that I got in high school. If I bend without intention or hyper extend my knee, I can feel when I’m entering the danger zone. I had to learn that the only reason I would enter the danger zone is by not listening to my body, and being so attached to making the pose look a certain way (chin to the shin) that I’m pushing myself too far. The danger zone is called attachment. I’ve noticed that some days, I am very bendy. Some days I’m just not. Be gentle with your body and kind to yourself by giving your body what it needs today. Let go of whatever attachments you have to matching some type of ideal in your mind. Wherever you are today is where you need to be.

- Carrier Oils
Mix essential oils with carrier oils before applying to the body for the safest use. Because essential oils are so potent, it can be irritating to apply them directly to the skin. Mix only a few drops of essential oils to a carrier oil such as some of the ones listed below. While pretty much any oil can be a carrier oil, these oils are particularly good for applying to the skin. Types of Carrier Oils: Avocado Oil Coconut Oil Jojoba Oil Sweet Almond Oil
- Lock Your Energy
Our bodies are massive stories of energy. How we direct our energy is up to us. Ashtanga ABCs Day 9 {Lock Your Energy} Challenge Pose: Prasarita Padottanasana Our bodies are massive stories of energy. How we direct our energy is up to us, and bandhas, or energy locks, are a way of directing the flow of energy in the body. Uddiyana bandha, which we begin to find in this Wide Legged Forward Bend, helps to create upward rising energy and stabilizes the core. Try sucking in the low belly in this pose, allowing the breath to move into the upper chest and back ribs.
- Find Your Center
How are you finding your center nowadays? Ashtanga ABCs Day 1 {Find Your Center} Challenge Pose: Samasthitih In true Ashtanga fashion, we begin our challenge with Samasthitih, or equal standing posture. This is point 0. This is where we regain our composure and stand tall with the legs together, hands by the sides. Samasthitih is standing with intention. When I come to Samasthitih, it gives me a moment to find my center - to pause and check in with myself, observe how my body feels at that moment, and to breathe. How are you finding your center nowadays?
